No-nonsense, career coaching with an edge
Confidence, clarity and control over your professional choices

Confidence, clarity and control over your professional choices
You might be wondering why one might want a "cynical" coach.
Before I trained and qualified as a coach – after a long career in public service - I admit to having been well, cynical about the whole thing. I am allergic to wishy-washy, new-age, cheesy self-help philosophies.
But unlike modern cynicism, which implies a pessimistic, distrustful view of humanity, ancient Cynicism was actually quite optimistic about human nature. These Greeks believed that by stripping away social conventions, people could return to a happy, virtuous life aligned with their values.
My approach is pragmatic, no-nonsense, and solutions-focused. This method is founded on the belief that people have solutions inside themselves. And that where there is a will, they can find their way by looking to the future, rather than getting stuck on the past.
You will get honest coaching - that will enable you to live in accordance with your true self. Just like the Cynics did.
Time-efficient management: Time is precious, and my approach to coaching involves straight-talking to help you work through the most intractable issues in a supportive, yet pragmatic and actionable way.
Discretion & professionalism: Whether you suffer from imposter syndrome, burnout, poor work-life balance, fear of speaking up, fear of public engagements, low visibility, or an inability to progress, I work through issues organically so that you can find your impact and unique leadership style while maintaining authenticity.
Clear outcomes: I focus clients' energy and reflections on the future, on how issues can be fixed and what specific steps they can take to help themselves. This forward-looking method helps people focus on the journey ahead and feel like they’re making tangible progress.
Suitability:
Having almost always found myself at the intersection between the public and the private sector - acting as a bridge between the two - my experience might therefore appeal particularly to those in public sector-facing corporate roles or those in government departments / Arms Length Bodies / regulatory and other agencies.
I have been particularly effective in coaching early and mid-career professionals, but I am flexible and open to considering anyone who thinks I might be a good fit for them regardless. Coaching is, after all, an approach that lends itself to a wide variety of people and contexts.
Although I am a social introvert by nature, I have cultivated the skills and self-confidence to become a natural public speaker and enjoy supporting others in overcoming their fears and self-limiting beliefs. None of this in a cheesy / cringe way!

The person behind The Cynical Coach is me, Ilaria.
Prior to becoming a qualified coach, I spent 12 years in a number of UK government departments - as a senior civil servant, trade negotiator and economic adviser - serving as the bridge between the private and public sector. I specialised in trade and investment promotion across Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia and travelled extensively to ‘fly the flag’ for large and small businesses alike from across a range of sectors.
My international experience includes managing complex, matrixed and culturally-diverse teams of up to 320 people dispersed across 34 markets in Europe during Brexit and Covid, and motivating people using non-financial levers, instilling in them an ability to be resilient and agile in adverse circumstances.
I began my career in international development, working in both developed and developing countries, and in a number of multilateral organisations like the World Bank and the World Health Organisation.
An Italian, French and English speaker, I am an Officer of Order the British Empire and Chair of the Board of Trustees of a UK charity focused on supporting the educational needs of Namibian children.
